This category is reserved for one of Africa’s most iconic and commanding predators. A mature lion of this calibre represents years of survival, dominance, and experience within its environment. By the time a male reaches full maturity, it has already contributed to the pride’s genetics and played its role in the ecosystem. Ethical, selective hunting of older males—particularly those past their prime—can be conducted with minimal disruption to pride structure while generating critical funding for conservation. Honouring these lions is about recognising not just their physical presence, but the life they have lived and the wild systems they represent.
To qualify, only truly wild lions will be accepted—no captive-bred or South African lions are eligible. Each lion must be judged by our panel of experts to be fully mature, with entries assessed on age as well as the overall magnificence and presence of the animal. Clear photographic evidence must be submitted for evaluation, and any lion deemed immature will not be accepted.
